Adopting a Horse

So, you want to adopt a Shelter horse. Where do you start?

As an organization, our primary responsibility is to the horses. We are eager to place adoptable horses in new homes, but it's even more important to us to be sure our horses find the best situations possible; in some cases, this means a horse will live at our facility for the rest of his life. Most of our horses, however, are up for adoption in the right situation. A great deal of effort is devoted to matching adopters with horses who meet their needs and do not exceed their abilities; if you are interested in adoption, we are eager to meet with you and determine what kind of horse might be appropriate, as well as to make a visit to the facility where you would keep a horse you adopted.

"Fez" was seized from his owner due to malnutrition. (He has since been adopted.)

All of our adoption documents are now online. First, you'll want to read the Requirements and Regulations regarding adoptive homes. After that comes the Application. Once we receive your application, visit your facility, and help you decide which horse you want to adopt, the Contract is the final step. A reasonable adoption fee of $350.00 applies.

We admit that this process is complicated, but we have to ensure that we are sending horses to appropriate homes. If we haven't scared you off yet, please get in touch through e-mail or by phone at (505) 471-6179, so we can introduce you to the horses!
