"Dedicated to the well-being of New Mexico's horses,
Now and for the future".

Home Our Mission Donate Adopt Resources Meet the Horses Volunteer

Welcome to The Horse Shelter

We are a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of abused and neglected horses within the State of New Mexico. Our home is near the town of Cerrillos, south of Santa Fe, where we have a round-the-clock Barn Manager and facilities for about twenty horses.

The Horse Shelter depends on the kindness of individual donors who's financial support provides 75% of our funding. We also rely on a dedicated group of volunteers who assist in providing the loving care our horses so deeply need and deserve.

The Work of The Horse Shelter

First and foremost, we are dedicated to providing a safe, healthy, and loving environment for rescued horses. We follow up on each and every report we receive of horse abuse or neglect.

In addition, we provide information on proper horse care for horse owners. We make every attempt to assist individuals in the care of their horses. We pursue legal action in abuse cases when it becomes necessary.

We Need Your Help!

There are many ways in which you can help The Horse Shelter realize our goal of providing compassionate care for the abused and neglected horses we rescue.

Volunteers at The Horse Shelter help to provide necessary daily care. Many horses need special feed and medications.

  • Volunteer at The Horse Shelter
  • Donate what you can financially (individual donors contribute 75% of our budget)
  • Request a presentation on horses and their care for your school or club
  • Download Lesson Plans Grades K-1, Grade 2, Grade 3, or Grades 4-6 and teach children responsible horse care.
  • Hold a fundraiser - the perfect 4-H or other club event
  • Raise awareness of proper horse care in your community
  • Report incidents of abuse or neglect to The Horse Shelter immediately

Help Spread the Word!

Here's a unique opportunity to help raise awareness of the important work of The Horse Shelter.

(Your donation is still 100% tax deductible!)

"The Worst Hooves anyone has ever seen..."

Dulce's feet upon arrival at the Shelter.

"Dulce" is a recent rescue arrival at the Shelter. This mare had feet like no one at the Shelter had ever seen (picture at left). Her two front hooves extended nearly 12" and curled up on the ends. The Shelter farrier had to anesthetize her and give her an initial trim with a hacksaw! Dulce will likely require at least a year of rehabilitation, and it is unclear if she will ever be able to walk normally again due to the severe strain on her legs that she had apparently endured for years.
